Students attending SWCC who elect to pursue the Pharm.D. degree program at the Appalachian College of Pharmacy may take all courses required through Southwest’s Science. Medical degree. All applicants to ACP are subject to review and acceptance by ACP. No guarantee of admission or financial aid is expressed or implied. SWCC students completing the pre-pharmacy program are provided preferential admission to ACP when compared to similar applicants from non-partner institutions.

Checklist for Collaboration with the Appalachian College of Pharmacy (ACP)

  1. Complete online Southwest Admission Application and make sure all required information, including transcripts from other institutions are provided to SWCC.
  2. Declare a major in Science: Specialization Pre-Medical.
  3. Meet with Bill Taylor to find out course substitutions that will allow students to obtain an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree. Email: bill.taylor@sw.edu,  Telephone: 276-964-7309
  4. Receiving this degree and maintaining a high overall GPA and science GPA will enhance chance for admission to a four-year college or university or professional school.
  5. Application to ACP is through the online Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS, at http://www.pharmcas.org).
  6. Submission of supplemental application through PharmCAS
  7. Obtain two strong letters of recommendation.
  8. Successful completion of an on-campus admissions interview.

*These four hour science credit classes consist of three lecture hours and three laboratory hours.

** CHM 260 and CHM 261 Biochemistry lecture and lab may be substituted for PHY 202.

To receive the Associate of Arts and Science Degree Major Science: Specialization in Pre-Medical requirements:

Math; the student who needs MTH 161 will need 9 hours math, which includes one semester of calculus.
Social Science electives: ECO, PSY, SOC. Humanities electives: ENG, Art Appreciation, Music Appreciation, Foreign Language, REL, PHI.

Substitutions: HLT 143 is approved for HLT/PED credits. ACP requires 19 hours of electives

In order to fulfill the Electives requirement, the successful applicant must complete at least:

  • one course in social/behavioral sciences (3 semester credits) such as psychology or sociology
  • one course in the humanities/fine arts (3 semester credits) such as literature, art, or music
  • one course in ITE, ECO, or MTH (3 semester credits).

Humanities courses are content based courses rather than skilled-based courses, such as English Composition, or a foreign language course. Skill-based courses will not fulfill the Humanities requirements. The remaining four (4) semester credits can be fulfilled by the successful completion of any of the three categories described above.

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that students take the listed math and science classes during their two years at SWCC
