Library Mission

The library facilities help to support the Library’s overall Mission and, in particular, the goal, “to serve as a focal point for research and study, to provide students, academic personnel, and community users access to informational resources, and to provide an up-to-date collection of library materials which support and enhance the educational programs of the College.”

Computer Access

Public and student access computers are conveniently located near the Circulation Desk, while wireless laptop computers are available for use throughout the library. We now have a fully equipped instructional computer lab. All computers are networked with access to the Internet; to the PRIMO online catalog, which indexes print books, electronic books, and print and non-print journal collections; to locally provided databases; to the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) databases provided as shared collections with the VCCS, and to other college libraries in the VCCS and Virginia. The online catalog also gives access to the Distance Learning & Instructional Technology resources.  Canvas, the Student System, and Student Email can be accessed on the library’s public computers.  Wireless access for personal laptops/devices is provided throughout the library as well as the Ratliff Commons seating and study area outside the library entrance. Wireless printing is also available.

Brick Sculptures

The Ratliff Commons area outside the library entrance showcases brick sculptures by local artist Johnny Hagerman.  The sculptures depict Native American pictographs spread across the south side of limestone cliffs on Paintlick Mountain.  Paintlick Mountain can be seen in the wide mountain view vista from our floor-to-ceiling windows.  Other sculptures within the building, including water features, depict animal life in the area and the Little River, which begins at Maiden Springs and runs through the valley beside Paintlick Mountain.  The sculptures and the view are well worth the visit to the Learning Resources Center.

Library Collections

The campus I.D. station, Circulation Desk, Reference Desk, Interlibrary Loan Office, conference/study rooms, public-use copier, and offices of the Coordinator of Library Services, Acquisitions personnel, and Cataloging personnel are conveniently located in Dellinger Hall. The library collections are within easy access to the circulation desk. Collections are also accessible for persons with disabilities, and staff assistance is provided if needed.

Library collections include: Circulating, Audio Books/CD Audio, Videos/DVDs, Distance Learning & Instructional Technology instructional and speaker/presentation videos, Periodicals, Newspapers, Reference, Juvenile, Software, New Books, Reserves, Oversize, and Art Reprints. The Lee Smith Faculty Reading Room is named for a local author and includes some of her memorabilia and Appalachian Literature materials.  Click here for a pdf list of the materials in the faculty reading room.

Seating and Library Spaces

Total seating is one hundred seventy-seven (177). Seating includes eight (8) carrels and four (4) quiet study rooms, each seating eight (8), available for individual and small-group study and meeting needs. Twenty-four (24) public computer workstations and seating at twelve (12) tables are provided for students’ educational needs. We also have a computer instructional lab that seats thirty-six (36). The Lee Smith Faculty Reading Room includes desks and comfortable chairs, seating for nine (9), and a children’s area with a table and seating for four (4). Comfortable chairs in the main area are also provided, where students and patrons can read, relax, use laptop computers, or enjoy the spectacular mountain view from our floor-to-ceiling windows.
