If you’re interested in law enforcement, corrections, or public safety, the Criminal Justice Associate of Applied Science (AAS) at Southwest Virginia Community College gives you a clear, practical path forward. This program is designed to help you build professional skills and prepare for leadership roles across the criminal justice field—right here in our region and beyond.

What You’ll Learn

The Criminal Justice curriculum blends career-focused coursework with a strong general education foundation. You’ll develop the knowledge and professional proficiency needed for work in areas such as law enforcement, corrections, security, and wildlife management and enforcement. The program is structured to support both students new to the field and those with prior experience looking to advance.

Program Details

This program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree and can be completed in two years (four semesters). You’ll complete a minimum of 63 credits and may have the option to take courses through distance learning, offering flexibility for working students and adult learners. 

Career Preparation

Graduates of the Criminal Justice AAS are prepared for a range of occupational roles, including local, state, and federal law enforcement or corrections positions, commercial and industrial security roles, wildlife enforcement, criminal justice administration, and private investigation. The curriculum is designed with real-world application in mind, helping you connect classroom learning to professional expectations.

If you plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree, articulation agreements and transfer information are available to help you continue your education at a four-year college or university after completing your associate degree.

Important Admission Information

Prospective students should be aware that the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services may deny certification to applicants who do not meet requirements outlined in the Code of Virginia. Certain criminal convictions can also restrict employment opportunities in criminal justice organizations, including law enforcement and corrections.
