The Applied Artificial Intelligence Career Studies Certificate is for people whose work already involves AI and people who can see it coming. You don't leave your job, and you don't start a degree over.
Most people using these tools on the job taught themselves by guessing. They got something useful, then something confidently wrong, and they have no way to tell which is which. Their employer has no policy, and nobody on staff who can write one.
That's the gap this certificate closes.
- Use the major AI tools on actual work: writing, spreadsheets, research, summarizing a pile of documents
- Read the output critically and catch where a tool is wrong, which is the skill employers can't find
- Know what data can and can't go into these tools, and who is accountable when the answer is wrong
- Work with data; pull it, read it, explain what it says to someone who wasn't in the room
You don't have to be a computer person
The certificate opens with Introduction to Microcomputers, which is exactly what it sounds like. If you're comfortable with a phone and an email account, you can start here. There's no programming, and no math sequence to clear first.
What you'll take
Six courses, one semester, seventeen credits:
- ITE 101 — Introduction to Microcomputers. The working basics.
- ITE 135 — Artificial Intelligence Awareness. What these systems are and how they actually produce an answer.
- ITE 142 — Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Tools for Business. The tools themselves, on the kind of work you'd bring to them.
- ITE 153 — Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and Governance. Rules, risk, accountability, and how to write a policy people can follow.
- ITE 195 — Topics in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. Working with data, and what AI is useful for once you have some.
- ITE 228 — Applied Artificial Intelligence for Business. Putting it together on a real problem.
The credits don't stop here
All seventeen credits stack into associate degree programs at Southwest: Business, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, Health Sciences, and Advanced Manufacturing. Finish the certificate, and you've finished part of a degree, whether or not you decide to keep going.
