2011 Graduates

 
  Chelsea Warner completed science pre-requisite courses for pharmacy school and will be attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Charlotte Hillman and Randall Warner. She is the granddaughter of Bob and Zora Hillman of Lebanon, VA.
 
Douglas Burke completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science. Mr. Burke is attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA .He is the son of Doug and Sarah Burke of Castlewood, VA.
 
Jenna Nicole Pruitt completed science pre-requisite courses for pharmacy school. She graduated from Bluefield College in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Pruitt will be attending the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA She resides in Pounding Mill, VA with her husband, Justin. She is the daughter of James and Gay Pruitt of Pounding Mill, VA
 
  Jarren McCowan completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science  in May. Mr. McCowan will be attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA this fall. He is the son of Dennis and Pam McCowan of Haysi, VA
 
  Laurin Widener Keene completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science in May. Keene will be attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA.  She resides in Richlands, VA with her husband, Ethan. She is the daughter of Richard and Sheilah Widener of Richlands, VA.
 

 

Matthew Shawn Justus  completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science. Justus will be attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA this fall. He is the son of Shawn and Rebecca Justus of Hurley, VA.

 

Jessica Street

  Jessica Street completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science at Southwest. Street will attend the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA She is the daughter of Eddie and Regina Street of Rowe, VA.

The SLC exposes students to career choices and broadens knowledge of what is available in science education through field trips, guest speakers, mentoring and job shadowing. The SLC provides help to students intending to transfer. SLC faculty members are on-hand to help students through the process. Students can also take advantage of the many resources the SLC offers such as loan of Dell laptop computers and Texas Instruments Voyage 200 multifunctional calculators. Any SWCC student interested in a career in science can enroll in the SLC. Asa Kirby (left) and Lindsey Wallace, members of the Science Learning Community at SWCC, have been accepted for admission to Virginia Tech. Kirby will major in Animal and Poultry Science and Wallace’s major will be Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise with a Dietetics option. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech offers a Guaranteed Admissions Agreement to SWCC students. In order to qualify, students sign a letter of intent, complete a transfer associate degree with a specified set of courses, and graduate with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

Southwest recently hosted the Tazewell County Science Fair. Judges for the event were: Jason Osborne, Professor of Biology; Annette Lockhart, Professor of Chemistry; and John Brenner, Professor of Sociology. Members of the SWCC Science Learning Community recently visited the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, Virginia. The students were provided a tour of the campus. A luncheon provided an informal opportunity to talk to college administrators and current students to learn about experiences inside and outside of the classroom.

Laurin Widener More young women are pursuing lucrative careers in non-traditional fields. Laurin Widener, a science major at Southwest, is one of them. She is featured in a new publication, Non-Traditional Careers for Women 2 developed by the SWCC Institutional Development Division and funded through the Carl Perkins Vocational Act.

How to Enroll

 
  All math and science majors enroll in SDV 101 (Orientation for Science majors) in the first fall semester.
SDV 295 in the following spring semester is optional.
 
 

SDV Class

 
  The SDV 101 is a two credit course taught by Dr. Susie Mullins on M-W from 12-1:00.

The SDV 295 is a one credit course taught by Dr. Susie Mullins on Mondays from 12-1:00 p.m.

  Dax Bostic  
  Dax Bostic completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science in May. Mr. Bostic is attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA. He is the son of David and Deane Bostic of Council VA.  
  Shane Viars  
  Shane Viars completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science and will be attending the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA. He is the son of Berlin and Norma Viars of Oakwood.  
 

Shandi Mullins completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science. Mullins is set to attend the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA. She is the daughter of Noah and Nikia Mullins of Iaeger, WV.

  Wes Bevins completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree with a major in Science. Bevins will be attending the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA iHe resides in Coeburn, VA with his wife, Sarah. He is the son of Charles and Jennifer Bevins of Coeburn, VA.  
   
  Brandy L. Lockhart completed science pre-requisite courses for pharmacy school at Southwest . She graduated from SWCC with an Associate of Applied Science degree with a major in Respiratory Care in May of 2005. Lockhart will be attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA . She is the daughter of Fairley Lockhart and the late Deborah B. Lockhart of Tazewell, VA.  
 
  Kaitlin Clay (pictured) completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Science. Clay will be attending Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, VA,  She is the daughter of Danny and Karen Clay of Castlewood, VA.
