Narrative:
SVCC has a clearly defined and published mission/purpose
statement specific to the institution which addresses teaching,
learning, and public service. The institution reviews the
mission/purpose statement periodically, and the statement is
contained in major college publications and handbooks. As a
comprehensive community college, the SVCC mission/purpose
statement accurately reflects the college’s commitment to the
service region.
SVCC has the highest participation rate (percentage of residents
taking a fall term class) of any of the VCCS colleges for each of
the twenty years this statistic has been gathered. In 2003, 68
percent of the area residents attending a Virginia college or
university were enrolled at SVCC. These statistics are strong
indicators of the community’s overwhelming response to the
college’s comprehensive mission and educational programs.
