Analysis of Performance of Developmental and Non Developmental Students in English Credit Classes
Including Fall 1997 grades the Fall English cohort contains  10,860 records.
1,507 records  (13.9%) are from students who took Developmental work before taking credit courses.
  9,353 records (86.1%) are from students who did not take Developmental work before taking credit courses. 
The Pass Rate (records having an A, B, C or P grade) was:
55.2% for students with a Developmental background.
  73.6% for students with a Non-Developmental background.    
Overall, Developmental records had higher "D," "F," "R,"  "I," and "W" Rates
Developmental "D"-6.1% "F"-11.2% "R"-10.9% "I"-1.4% "W"-13.8%
Non-Developmental "D"-3.2% "F"-6.4% "R"-5.3% "I"-1.0% "W"-9.9%
Developmental records had a higher Audit Rate than Non-Developmental records--1.2% for Developmental and 0.3% for Non-Developmental, too.
Rates in Particular Courses
ENG 100 (Basic Occupational Communication) with about 3% of the records

In  these program related courses Developmental students had a lower Pass Rate than Non-Developmental students.  Developmental students had 
higher "D"/"F" Rates and Withdrawal Rates than Non-Developmental students.   Developmental students comprise higher percentage of students 
in these courses than in other credit English courses.
ENG 111 (College Composition I) with about 41% of the records

In these two important courses (together they constitute over 2/3 of the records) Developmental students had a low Pass Rate in ENG 111.
In both courses students with a Developmental background had higher "D"/"F" Rates than Non-Developmental students  and in ENG 112 
these rates were almost twice those of students from a Non-Developmental background.  Developmental students had higher  Withdrawal Rate in 
ENG 111 and ENG 112 than students with Non-Developmental backgrounds.
ENG 241 (American Literature I)  with about 6% of the records

Few Developmental students took the Survey of American Literature courses, but those who did had higher Pass Rates than their overall Pass Rate. 
In Survey of American Literature II the Developmental students had a higher Pass Rate than the Non-Developmental students.
While students with a Developmental background had a higher "D"/"F" Rate in American Literature I, they had a lower "D"/"F" Rate in 
American Literature II.
