The campus of Southwest Virginia Community College is the site for the sixth
summer Music, Art, Drama (MAD) Enrichment Camp. MAD Camp will be held Monday,
July 16, through Friday, July 20, from 9:30 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. in the SWCC
King Community Center. The week-long cultural enrichment camp is open to any
upcoming third-graders to ninth-graders. The theme of the camp is “Kaleidoscope
of the Arts.” Campers will experience activities that will stimulate their
imagination and introduce them to the very wide range of what constitutes music,
art, and drama. Every day a Noon-Time Experience will take place. This year
campers will experience the performance of different styles of dancing, they
will experience how two pianists can perform duets playing different styles of
music at the same time, and they will experience how sidewalk art can speak to
the soul. A Friday night “Show and Tell” and potluck dinner will take place in
the King Gym to allow the students to share what they have been experiencing
during the week. Returning clinicians are founding director of the East
Tennessee Children’s Chorus Beth McCoy, Richmond-area artist Abby Bland, and
Second-City actor Joey Bland. The tuition for the week is $100 for those who
register before June 1. After June 1, the fee is $115. Tuition will cover the
cost of the camp and the special noon-time experiences. In order the keep the
cost of tuition down, students will bring their own sack lunches, and the camp
will provide drinks and cookies.
In addition to MAD Camp, an Advanced Theater Workshop will be open to a limited
number of high school-age and older theater lovers who want the experience of
training in improvisational theater. The Advanced Theater class will take place
3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. from Monday-Thursday. Joey Bland will be the workshop leader
for this workshop. Tuition for the workshop is $50.
