The Appalachian School of Law, in collaboration with the Appalachian Arts Center and Southwest Virginia Community College, began a community service project to create blankets for children in the CASA program. Through this project, law students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers have learned to knit, crochet, and put their skills to use in creating individual squares, which are then joined into blankets. A sampling of those blankets will be displayed in this exhibit.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that utilizes trained volunteers to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children in court. CASA actively supports community awareness of child abuse and neglect and promotes the belief that every child has a right to grow, develop and thrive in a safe and caring environment.
The Appalachian Blanket Circle has benefited greatly thanks to the generosity of local churches and charitable organizations, including St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Grundy Woman’s Club. In addition, this project is grateful for the generous donation of 400 pounds of yarn from A Likely Yarn in Abingdon, Virginia.
Appalachian Blanket Circle: A Community Service Project will be on display in the gallery at the Booth Center in Grundy, Virginia, February 3 through March 1. A reception for this exhibit and community project will be held on Thursday, February 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the gallery of the Booth Center in Grundy, Virginia.
