Prizes Abound at SWCC’s Scholarship Golf Classic

The annual Southwest Virginia Community College Scholarship Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, September 25th, at 1:00 P.M., at the Tazewell County Country Club. This popular tournament is a win-win situation for everyone. While the tournament raises over $25,000 annually for scholarships at SWCC, it also provides an opportunity for participants to win excellent prizes. Prizes are donated by area businesses and include a 2008 Ford vehicle for a hole-in-one on hole # 3, provided by Jimmy Davidson’s Pounding Mill Ford. Other prizes are available for winners of a hole-in-one on other par three’s.

Cash prizes are awarded for closest to the pin on par three’s and for longest drive on # 18 and most accurate drive on # 4. Numerous door prizes will be given to tournament players through a drawing. Participants will also receive a tournament golf ball, a hat and a towel. Snacks and drinks are provided during play and a reception and dinner, provided by Food City, conclude the day’s events.

The tournament is a two-person team, Captain’s Choice format with men’s, women’s or mixed teams. Participation fee is $150 per person that includes “trash” (one red tee, one druther, entries for two $100 cash prizes and a “Grand Prize”, handcrafted by SWCC President Mark Estepp.) The fee for Tournament Sponsors is $1000 (with two players) and Hole Sponsors, $500 (with 1 player).

This year’s tournament is a tribute to W. A. “Zan” Stuart who was SWCC’s first board chair and championed the College and its mission over the past forty years. As board chair, he was instrumental in implementing Thomas Jefferson’s dream of “having a college within a day’s ride of every Virginian’s residence.” “Zan,” an avid sportsman, played in most of the SWCC golf tournaments over the years.
