Color, light, movement of patterns… all this is captured in a series of photographs titled “Water Movement Studies” by Aleta Cortes. These photographs will be on exhibit from December 5 through December 23rd in the Booth Center Gallery in Grundy Virginia.

Originally from Philadelphia, Aleta Cortes is a painter and photographer who has lived on a mountaintop in southern West Virginia for over 10 years. Her photographs are a result of an in-depth exploration of the beauty of nature where she has sought to capture the beauty of the colors, the effects of light, and the ever-changing movement of patterns while unfolding the beautiful quality and layering effects within reflections. Cortes strives to maintain an overall painterly quality in her photographs and utilizes the camera as a painting tool. The photographs are taken with a DSLR camera and have not been digitally manipulated.

Cortes attended Temple University, Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and earned a BFA in painting and a Professional Certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. She has been published in several magazines and exhibited her work in galleries throughout West Virginia and Virginia. Cortes was awarded the 2007 National Endowment for the Arts/West Virginia Commission on the Arts Fellowship for Photography.
