 SVCC 2008 Portfolio Resume class

Southwest Virginia Community College presents the emerging artists of this year's Portfolio Resume class. The Eclectic Menagerie, a group exhibition will be on display at the Appalachian Arts Center May 6-June 26, 2008. Everyone is invited to the Opening Reception on Friday, May 9, from 4:30-7:00pm.
The Eclectic Menagerie features artworks in a variety of media.
Daniel Cunningham's work is expressed in the digital realm, as well as in sculpture. He enjoys a tongue-in-cheek approach to the sometimes serious art world. Carolyn Dameron's paintings and drawings celebrate life! She finds inspiration in her family and surroundings, documents moments, and captures memories. Jessica Hayes most recent series, Triskadekaphobia, conveys the raw emotion of fear to the viewer. Her photographs combined with digital manipulation expose these powerful emotions. Peggy Herbert revitalizes the ages-old art of Scherenschnitte (paper cut silhouettes). Her current body of work focuses on capturing the personalities of pre-photography imagery. Johnathan Keene loves the intricate details of realism and the simple, clean lines of comics. His drawings and paintings capture the action and fluidity of the human form. (see image above)

The Portfolio Resume course is designed to provide students with instruction and guidance in creating a professional resume and artists' portfolio. The students were responsible for creating these new bodies of work, as well as the preparation, promotion, and installation of this exhibition. Robyn Raines, the instructor for the course, has worked with the students this semester in preparing their “artists packets” and this exhibition. Along with teaching, Raines is the Director of the Appalachian Arts Center and a local studio artist.
The Appalachian Arts Center is located on Rt. 19 in Wardell; 2.5 miles south of Claypool Hill and 2.5 miles north of Southwest Virginia Community College. The Arts Center is open Tuesday-Saturday 12 noon-5:30 pm. For more information, please call 276.596.9188.
