Southwest Virginia Community College will host a Family Day on Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, in the Community Center on campus. Designed for parents of current or future college students, the event will offer insight into the often overwhelming tasks involved in many of the college processes. Event topics include applying for financial aid, dual enrollment, parents’ rights, campus safety, and applying for available scholarships. Sessions will be conducted by seasoned professionals with expertise in the many faucets of the college processes.
“College enrollment or transfer processes can be intimidating,” said Amanda Bohon, SWCC counselor and assistant professor. “This can sometimes result in poor choices or missed opportunities. With our Family Day, Southwest is supplying parents and students a place to come for some very valuable information, actually providing parents the inside track they need to put their son or daughter on the right path to college.”
Four other colleges will be participating in Southwest’s Family Day event, which also offers a Student Track Session addressing career choices and extra curricular activities for current and future students.
“This is another step Southwest is taking to ensure parents have the best available resources in making some very important choices about their daughter or son’s future,” said Dr. Mark Estepp, President of Southwest Virginia Community College. “Our Family Day will supply parents with the opportunity to acquire the tools needed in making these very important decisions.”
Lunch will be provided and all SWCC’s Family Day participants will receive gift bags. Giveaways at the event include a scholarship, a vacation package to any destination in the continental U.S., and other prizes.
“College is an investment for the future,” said Bohon. “Southwest is offering this as an added bonus for our students, parents and our communities. It doesn’t matter what college they are planning on attending. What matters is that parents know how to help and advise their children in the decision making process that comes with college. The ultimate goal of Family Day is to demystify college enrollment.”
