Local Professor to Publish Biographies

Four articles by Greg Horn, assistant professor of English at SwVCC, are scheduled to appear in the forthcoming book Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century by Salem Press. This reference volume, which will be released in Summer 2008, contains a collection of concise biographies of the most important musical figures of the past 100 years.

It is intended primarily for use by high school and college students engaged in research projects, as well as all other readers interested in basic facts about music and musicians.

Horn will be contributing biographies of bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, country singer/songwriter Merle Haggard, and rock and roll icons Chuck Berry and John Lennon to the publication.

Over the past ten years, Horn has written more than fifteen articles for reference books by Salem Press.  His biographies and critical studies of major authors like poets Sylvia Plath and Henry Taylor, and several other literary figures have appeared in publications including Critical Survey of Poetry, Cyclopedia of World Literature, and the popular Masterplots series.  Salem Press’s reference works appear on library shelves and in bookstores around the world.

“I’ve been really pleased that Salem has allowed me to participate in so many of their projects,” says Horn.  “I was especially excited when they offered me the chance to write about musicians—particularly some of the ones I’ve listened to and admired all my life.  To get to do things like this is really rewarding.”

A lifelong resident of southwest Virginia, Horn has taught literature and writing at SwVCC since 1993.
