Southwest Virginia Community College and the Southwest Virginia Historical and Preservation Society recently presented former Virginia Governor James S. Gilmore, III (1998-2002), as a speaker in the Virginia Governors' Series.

The event took place on the SwVCC campus. Dr. J. Mark Estepp, president of SwVCC, welcomed the audience, which consisted of college students, students from Council, Lebanon, Richlands, and Tazewell high schools, SwVCC faculty and staff, and community members.

Dr. Robert Tomlinson, vice president for instruction at SwVCC introduced former Governor Gilmore as the 10th anniversary speaker in the series.

Governor Gilmore spoke about the highlights of his term in office including his successes in education, transportation, technology, and his prominent role as chair of Homeland Security during the time of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
