Southwest Virginia Community College is hosting an art exhibit entitled “Tazewell County: There’s No Place Like Home” featuring the digital photography of G. Michael Alford. The photography is on exhibit from February 20 through March 29 in the King Community Center Gallery. A reception honoring the artist will be held on Thursday, March 1 at 12:15 pm in the gallery and lobby area of the Center. The public is encouraged to attend this free event and/or view the artwork Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Using digital photography, Alford captures the beauty of Tazewell County, its country towns, and community life. He uses vibrant colors, shadows and different reflections as his source of inspiration to create the perfect photograph. His photos are displayed throughout offices in the Tazewell County Courthouse, the town of Tazewell Municipal Building, New People’s Bank (Tazewell Branch), the office of Dr. Assaad Mounzer, and various residences throughout the county area. His digital artwork is featured in Dr. Terry Mullins’ and Louise Leslie’s book entitled Tazewell and in Thompson and Litton’s presentation for Tazewell County’s Bluestone Project. Alford received second and third place for digital photography at the 2006 Tazewell County Fair and he is an active member of the Princeton Camera Club.
Alford was raised in Tazewell, Virginia, on Ben Bolt Avenue and is employed by the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff. He is an alumnus of Southwest Virginia Community College with an AAS degree in Administration of Justice, Public Service Technology and certificates in Law Enforcement and Hazardous Materials. He currently resides in Bishop, Virginia, with his wife, Pam.
