High School Students Can Get Head Start
on College through Dual Enrollment

their college education by enrolling in dual-enrollment courses

Richard Edwards (right), a
successful businessman and community leader in Dickenson County,
was honored as the PTK 2005 Distinguished Alumnus at Southwest
Virginia Community College’s Homecoming Celebration. Edwards, a
1975 graduate of SVCC, has dedicated many years of his life to
providing opportunities for others to obtain a college education.
He has served on the College Board for 19 years and is currently
serving on the SVCC Educational Board. He is pictured with Dr.

SVCC Homecoming ’05 a Huge Success!

Southwest Virginia Community College alumni are
pictured who were inducted into this year’s SVCC Alumni Hall of
Fame. Over 400 alumni, former and current board members, faculty,
staff, and students gathered recently for Southwest Virginia
Community College’s Homecoming 2005. SVCC literally rolled out the
red carpet as the theme of the evening was “Spotlight on SVCC
Alumni Stars.” Guests enjoyed an evening of food, fun, and
memories as they honored SVCC Alumni.

The “Veterans All” Veterans Breakfast 2005 was held on Saturday,
November 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the Gene T. Dye Armory. Special thanks and
recognition was extended to the 276th Engineer Battalion Company B,
which recently completed a tour of duty in the Middle East.

College Working Towards Goals
Dateline
2009 gives a strategic direction to Virginia Community
Colleges to move toward becoming a world-class community college
system. There are seven major components of this strategic plan
including: enrollment; workforce training; graduation, retention,
placement rates; transfer to four-year colleges and universities;
affordable tuition; dual enrollment with high schools; and private
funding. Southwest is working diligently towards contributing to
Dateline 2009 goals.

Determination the Hallmark of SVCC
Student

Elizabeth Scruggs is a typical college student. The
Southwest Virginia Community College student is concerned about
classes, homework, and tests. In between classes you can find her
chatting with friends or at her home base in the Student Support
Services office. Her unrelenting determination and winning
personality are what make her unique. “Her presence has added a
lot to this campus. She is a positive role model for students,”
said her counselor and mentor, Dr. Susie Mullins. Born with spina
bifida, Scruggs was able to walk on canes until a back surgery at
the age of nine left her weakened. Since then Scruggs has gotten
around in a wheelchair. “I can still walk some, I walk sometimes
at home,” she said.

Donation made to SVCC Scholarship Effort

Dan L. Adams, Manager of
Community Affairs for Appalachian Power Company, presents Dr.
Charles R. King a gift to Southwest Virginia Community College
Educational Foundation, Inc. as a tournament sponsor for the 2005
SVCC Scholarship Golf Classic. The popular golf tournament had 86
players and raised over $22,000 for scholarships. Dr. King affirms
that “AEP has been a longtime friend of SVCC and we appreciate
their valuable support in numerous ways.” Mary W. Lawson,
Executive Director of the SVCC Educational Foundation, joins in
the presentation.

The Virginia College Tour for 2005 recently brought 44
senior college representatives plus the National Guard to the
Southwest Virginia Community College
Community Center. The College was host for this
event for the four Tazewell County high school senior classes.
Many Southwest students, who are considering transferring after
completing a
two year degree, were also able to make contact with this
wide-variety of four-year college and university representatives.
The event was well attended.
A participant in the annual
Southwest Virginia Community College
Scholarship Golf Classic may be the winner of a new
Ford truck sponsored by Prestige Ford of Claypool Hill. The
winner must have a Hole-in-One on Hole Number 3 at Tazewell County
Country Club during the tournament on September 22nd, beginning at
1:00 PM. Scotty Lawson (far left) of Prestige Ford admires the
Grand Prize with Dr. Charles R. King, President of SVCC, and Mary
W. Lawson, Executive Director of the SVCC Educational Foundation.
Other prizes will be awarded for a Hole-in-One on other par 3
holes. Numerous other prizes are awarded to the participants in
this popular tournament. Proceeds go to the scholarship program at
SVCC, where many students qualify for financial aid. For

The Southwest Virginia Community College Student
Government Association has collected over $1,000 from SVCC
students, faculty, and staff to send to the Gulf coast for the

Students were CONNECTED with their academic
and club advisors on Thursday, September 1. The event featured fun
inflatables (like rock-climbing and Velcro walls), free hotdog
lunch, and club and academic contacts. The event was held to
promote a connection between students and their advisors.

Governor, was the commencement speaker for the Summer 2005
Southwest Virginia Community College graduation. His keynote
message was that “Character and Opportunity Are Keys to Success.”

Part-time Evening and Weekend RN Program Unveiled

Southwest Virginia Community College President Dr. Charles R. King has
announced a new part-time evening & weekend Registered Nurse Program that will
offer area residents the flexibility to become a RN while continuing to work.
SVCC was recently awarded a $562,480 federal grant from the U.S. Dept. of Health
and Human Services to establish a nursing program that will offer classes
through alternative delivery methods, such as distance education, online
courses, interactive compressed video classes, weekend and evening classes, and
“virtual clinical experiences.” This project will operate in conjunction with
the Virginia Appalachian Tricollege Nursing Program (VATNP). VATNP has
established RN programs at Southwest Virginia Community College, Mountain Empire
Community College, and Virginia Highlands Community College. For more

Two Years + One SwVCC Degree + a Transfer = A Simple
Formula for Success
Individuals
thinking about attending a four-year college or university should consider
getting an Associate degree from SwVCC before transferring to the four-year
college or university of their choice.
“We’re very pleased with the fact that our students transfer to their first
choice four-year college or university,” said Dr. Charles King, president of
SwVCC. “One hundred percent of the respondents to a recent Alumni survey
indicated that they were accepted at the college of choice to which they had
applied,” Phyllis Roberts, Grants and Alumni Officer for the College, said
referring to a major finding in a recent survey conducted by her office.

CLC Announces July Short Term or Weekend
Classes
Several
computer classes are still open for enrollment during summer semester 2005. The
SVCC Computer Learning Center provides an excellent learning experience, mixed
with casual surroundings that usually eliminate the drawbacks some people
experience when learning how to use computers. Team work and helping each other
is encouraged. If you have a few free Saturdays or at least one night a week,
why not take advantage of the classes scheduled now at the SVCC
Computer Learning Center.

Award

The 2005 Southwest Virginia Community College Virginia
Mountain Music Festival was a resounding success. This yearly event is a
free gift to the community that helps preserve the region’s rich musical
heritage. This year’s festival showcased such legendary acts as Larry Cordle &
Lonesome Standard Time and The Tony Rice Unit as well as a variety of other
bluegrass talent including Foggy River, Bluegrass Kinsmen, Fescue, Faster than
Walking, Ron & Rory Mullennex, Bluestone, Pack ‘n tha Grass, and SVCC Bluegrass

Displaced worker Christopher Axsom is enrolling in classes at
Southwest Virginia Community College to prepare himself for another
career path. Brenda Robinson, the Trade Readjustment Allowance (TRA)
Representative for SVCC, will be at the SVCC Lebanon Center on June 16
and June 23rd from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A financial aid representative

VA recently traveled to the SVCC Computer Learning Center (CLC) to take the
CompTIA A+ Hardware exam. The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA)
provides vendor neutral informational technology examinations and
certifications.

The Credit Bureau of the Virginias Foundation Scholarship program grants five
$1000 scholarships annually to students from the southwest Virginia/southern
West Virginia counties bordering the Bluefield area.

New Peoples Bank is helping bring educational opportunities to the region by
establishing an endowed scholarship at SwVCC. Tim Witt, branch manager of the
Claypool Hill office, presents the gift to SVCC President Dr. Charles R. King.
Mary W. Lawson, executive director of the SVCC Educational Foundation, joins in
the presentation. New Peoples Bank is an independent, locally owned, community
bank with 21 offices located in Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and Southern
West Virginia. Kenneth Hart serves as President and CEO of New Peoples Bank
which is headquartered in Honaker, VA. The New Peoples Bank scholarship will be
awarded annually to a student of any age and in any curriculum at SVCC. The
first scholarship award will be made for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Recipients of the Sam G. McCall, Jr. Family Scholarship
at Southwest
Virginia Community College were recently guests at a lunch in their honor. The
scholarship fund was established by Sam G. Mc Call, Jr., former resident of
Richlands, and his wife, Priscilla and son-in-law, David Moon, now of
Greensboro, NC. Twenty $1000 scholarships are awarded annually to first or
second year students, who are residents of either Tazewell or Buchanan County.

Fourth-grade students from Ms. Ward’s class at Cedar Bluff Elementary School
have visited Southwest Virginia Community College. While on campus, students
enjoyed a bluegrass performance. They also visited Distance and Distributed
Learning to participate in an electronic classroom demonstration. Students
visited the Library and Learning Assistance Center where they toured the
children’s book area of the library and had digital photographs taken. They then
played educational games in the Learning Assistance Center.

awarded the Glen Fox Memorial Teaching Scholarship for prospective Math Teachers
from the Virginia Mathematics Association for Two Year Colleges. The $700
scholarship is awarded to one qualified applicant in the state each year. Ashley
