Remote Access

Printable Version

Registered SVCC students have remote (off-campus) access to VIVA and several other specially purchased library databases,  which are not available to the general public.

If you are accessing electronic library resources from a computer away from the campus, you may be prompted for a username and password.  In most instances, you will enter your VIVA username and password to access the electronic library resources.

Your VIVA (library) username is the same as your SVCC Student Information System (VCCS SIS) and Blackboard (Bb) usernames.

To determine your SVCC (and VIVA) username, go to MYSouthwest at http://sw.my.vccs.edu/jsp/home.jsp There is a convenient link to MYSouthwest on the SVCC web page and in the banner of the Library web page.

There is one exception to using your VIVA username and password for off-campus access to library databases.  To access netLibrary e-books away from the campus, you will first need to create an account for netLibrary from a computer located on the SVCC campus.  If you cannot come to the SVCC campus to create your account, you may call the Library Circulation Desk at 276.964.7265 or the Reference Librarian at 276.964.7617 to create a netLibrary account over the telephone.

In addition, you will need to create a special account for LearningExpress Advantage (practice tests).  This can be done from campus or at home.  When creating a LearningExpress account, be sure to use the access code for Southwest Virginia Community College--10474.  See TAKE NOTICE for more information on LearningExpress practice tests.

NOTES:
Remote access may not be available if you try to link to the databases from the VIVA link on the SVCC Library web page.  DO NOT select the VIVA>>Databases List link if you are accessing the databases from off campus.  Always begin your searches from the links (but not VIVA) at the SVCC Library Page at http://www.sw.edu/library, or you can access the SVCC Library Page by starting at the SVCC main page at http://www.sw.edu and then selecting "Library Services."

Students taking Distance and Distributed Learning (DDL) courses will benefit from looking at the resources and links on the library web page created especially for DDL students at http://www.sw.edu/library/distance_education.htm.

Please contact one of the SVCC Librarians if you need help accessing Library resources:

276.964.7617, until 4:30 p.m.
276.964.7738, after 4:30 p.m.
