Instructions for Remote (off-campus) Access to Library Services

Return to Help

Registered SWCC students and SWCC faculty/staff (including adjunct faculty) have remote access to VIVA, VCCS's Metalib services, and several specially purchased library databases,  which are not available to the general public.  Follow the steps listed below to access library databases from your home/office.
Exceptions are netLibrary and Learn-A-Test;  accounts for netLibrary and Learn-A-Test must be created via a SWCC computer.
Please contact one of the librarians listed below if you have trouble accessing library resources.
Note: You do not have to be a registered student or staff to access the library catalog.
Access Instructions
Note:  Remote access may not be available if you try to link to the databases directly from the VIVA pages.  Always begin at the SWCC Library Page (http://www.sw.edu/library)... OR...Start at the SWCC main page (http://www.sw.edu) and then select "Library Services."
        Access any library resources listed.
Enter VIVA user name and password when prompted to do so.
First Step
User name:  Use your EMPL i.d. number or your VIVA username to get into the library databases.
Second Step
Don't know your EMPL i.d. or VIVA username?  You can go to http://sw.my.vccs.edu at MySouthwest to search for your EMPL i.d. or your username.
Third Step
Password:  No default password is assigned when your student account is created.  If you have not used the system recently then you can use the Username Lookup at https://sw.my.vccs.edu/jsp/userconfig.jsp  to find your username and access the password wizard to create your own secure password.  The system dictates that the password be changed at least every 90 days, so even if you have entered the directory system before, you may be requested to change your password.  You need to remember the following rules:
Passwords must
--contain a mix of letters and numbers
--be at least 7 but not more than 10 alphanumeric characters long,
--contain at least one upper and one lower case character
--cannot contain spaces and special characters
--cannot be the same as your username
Your password is a secret phrase that you shouldn’t share with anyone; it protects the privacy and confidentiality of your personal information.
Warning! The directory system  locks you out if you guess at or attempt to log in to the system using the wrong Login ID or password more than three times. On the 4th attempt with an incorrect password your account will be locked for 15 minutes. You have the option to locate the correct password and try again or reset your password at that time.
Note: If and when you change your password you must use the new password in all accounts;  SIS, student E-mail, Blackboard, or VIVA/VCCS Library Servies.  When you change your password, please ensure that you do not forget it.
Help information for the student directory can be found at http://www.sw.edu/sis/helpdesk.htm.
