Library Instruction Opportunities

Individual Instruction -
            Reference assistance is available to individuals.   Stop by the Library, call on the telephone, or e-mail the Reference Librarian for help with your research.  The Reference staff is also available for individual instruction.  Lengthy research projects may require scheduled appointments.

Class or Group Instruction -
            Library instruction sessions and tours of the Library are available for classes and/or groups.  Instructors are encouraged to call or use the online Library Instruction form located at the SWCC Library webpage (http://www.sw.edu/library) to schedule library instruction for classes.  Sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of individual classes and assignments.

Library Basics -
            Library Basics sessions are offered throughout the semester.  They are "free" 45-50 minute library demonstrations that anyone can attend.  Attendees learn how to use the SWCC Library web page to locate books, videos, audiocassettes, e-books, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.  They are shown how to access Library databases from computers away from campus.  In addition, they learn other valuable research skills, including how to formulate key word searches.  Stop by the SWCC Library Circulation Desk or call the Reference Librarian to learn about Library Basics sessions.

Chat with a Librarian -
            Bring your library and research questions to these informal chat sessions.  Call or e-mail the Reference Librarian or check at the SwVCC Library Circulation Desk to see a schedule of these informal sessions.  Librarians love to answer questions!

LBR 195 -
            1-credit hour library classes are available to interested individuals.  LBR 195, Topics in Virtual Libraries is offered during the Fall and Spring semesters.  The course will help you become a skilled researcher.  Whether you are a college transfer student, a teacher look for recertification points, or someone who just wants to learn more about the Library, this class is for you!
            Topics for LBR 195 include the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), Remote Access to Library Resources, Online Library Catalogs, Electronic Books, Online Periodicals and Full-Text articles, Online Encyclopedias and Dictionaries, Key Word Searching and Boolean Logic, Search Engines and Web Site Evaluation, and much, much, more!
            Classes are usually offered on Saturdays.  Watch the SWCC schedules of classes for LBR 195 classes.
