Purpose
The purpose of the Learning Assistance Center is to provide our users help with identifying and utilizing the resources they need to meet their learning needs.  Our commitment to service with a caring attitude creates a positive learning atmosphere that contributes to users' growth as learners.
We look forward to greeting each visitor in a pleasant, helpful manner and showing the many opportunities we have available in the Center.  In order to assist you in your academic goals the Center offers the following:

Learning Disability Software Information Packets
Computer Support
The computers in the center are available for numerous uses.  Office  XP and Windows XP are loaded on the majority of our computers.   We have a minimal number of computers offering Windows 98.  
Tutorials are available for students' use to increase their knowledge on such topics as Basic Math, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Accounting, Nursing, English, GED, and TABE.
Internet service is accessible on all computers to meet users' research and instruction needs.

Books and Media
The center is filled with various books on academic courses that can be used by the student to answer questions or assist in their learning including:
Aztec Learning System Chart Your Success on the Compass; Callahan, Commander, Cotter
Placement Testing: What You Need to Know -Compass   Asset Student Guide
Audio and visual media are present for students' use and may be viewed in the center including:
Accounting videos to accompany the current ACC 211 & ACC 212 classes   Math videos to accompany current MTH 02, MTH 03, MTH 04, MTH 151, MTH 152, MTH 163, & MTH 164
Spanish videos to accompany the current SPA 101 & SPA 102 classes    
Study Skills
The center consists of study skills material available for the students' review.  Topics such as Listening Skills, Note Taking, Test Taking, Memory Enhancement, Relaxation Techniques, Personal Development, Leadership, Creative Thinking and Problem Solving are covered in various media.  Access to audio and visual equipment is available for students' use in the center to review desired materials.
Cognitive Needs

LASSI (Learning and Study Strategies Inventory) - LASSI is an  assessment tool  designed to measure the students' use of  learning and study strategies and methods.

 

MBTI (Myers-Brigg Type Indicator)  - Provides students and staff the opportunity to learn about personality types by taking the MBTI ---- Administration and interpretation sessions will be offered periodically.

Aztec Learning System

Helps students enhance their academic needs in the following areas:

Another major focus in the center is the offering of GED materials.  Students may check out workbooks and videos to prepare themselves for the GED test.  They may also take the practice test, which will help determine which areas they need to improve their skills.  If a student takes the GED practice test, they will be able to take the GED test free of charge.
Compass
This computerized version of the ASSET placement test is available to determine the recommended Math and English classes.  To find out more about the Compass test - www.act.org  &/or  www.act.org/compass

Learning Disability Software

Captain's Log - Multi-level software that helps develop basic cognitive skills of attention, concentration, memory, eye-hand coordination, basic numeric concepts, problem-solving -  reasoning skills, self-esteem and self-control for adults and/or children with ADHA, brain injuries, psychiatric disorders or learning disabilities.

SoundSmart - Multi-media software designed for people who have difficulties with auditory attention, auditory discrimination, phonemic awareness, working memory, ability to follow directions, and mental processing.

MAGIC Screen Magnification Software with Speech for Windows  or  ZoomText—Software that magnifies the information on the screen allowing visually impaired students to read it. It also allows the users to have information read aloud as they type or hear existing text on the screen.

Window Eyes - Uses synthesized speech to read text or window based materials for students who are blind, visually impaired or has a reading problem.

Write Outloud - Provides auditory feedback for individuals with integrative processing disabilities that interfere with the writing process.

WYNN Wizard with OCR Software - Uses synthesized speech to read text that has been entered or scanned. It offers features for the blind, visually impaired, and learning disabled students.

JAWS - A "screen reading" software program designed to give blind computer users the ability to control their computer via audio feedback.
