Employee Password Requirements for SwVCC Network

The VCCS and VITA have issued requirements for password complexity, uniqueness, and length SO as a member of the VCCS, Southwest must comply with these requirements.

This  policy is in force as of 5/7/08 and users can expect to see prompts to change their passwords when accessing the network/email now and every 30 days in the future.

If you find yourself locked out of your account please contact Guy Glover at ext. 7547 or Charles Musick at ext. 7647

Passwords must meet the following guidelines:

Password History = The 5 previous passwords will be remembered by the system. This means that you will not be allowed to use any password out of the last 5 once the password has expired

Maximum Password Age = 30 Days. Passwords will be required to be changed every 30 days

Minimum Password Age = 1 Day. This means that users can only change their passwords once a day

Minimum Password Length = 8 Characters. Each password must be at least 8 characters

Password Complexity is enabled = This means that passwords need to include the following: Capital Letters, Lower Case Letters, Numbers, Special Characters (example!@*&^%)

Under these policies examples of good passwords would be:

Svcc1sThePlace2Be!
IH4teCh4ngingPa$$words
IWant2EatChocolate23*aday!

NOTE: If you suspect that your password/login information has been compromised contact your CISO, Ben Compton IMMEDIATELY at 276.964.7614.

All users must have a login identification and a password to access any resources provided by SwVCC. Users are expected to be diligent in guarding access to computer resources and protecting them from threats of unauthorized access from both inside and outside the college.

If you forget your network/email or SIS/AIS password and need assistance in changing it, contact Information Technology by phone at 7647, 7343, or 7344. Recent passwords will not be reused.

Passwords for all systems are subject to the following additional rules:

• Users with workstations in public high-traffic areas should use keyboard passwords to provide additional security and access control.
• No passwords are to be spoken, written, emailed, hinted at, shared, or in any way known to anyone other than the user involved except authorized Information Technology staff for technical support. This includes supervisors and assistants.
• No passwords are to be shared in order to "cover" for someone out of the office. Supervisors should complete the IT Service Change Form to create a temporary account to resources if needed or the supervisor can request assistance from IT to provide access to the absent employees’ computer.
• Passwords are not to be a user’s name, address, username, nickname, or any term that could be easily guessed by someone with the user.
• Passwords are not to be displayed or concealed on your workspace.
• Users should logoff and shutdown systems daily.
