Information Technology Training at Southwest

Fast Track Network Security

The Fast Track Network Security Program is an accelerated workforce development program designed to train participants as network security staff through course immersion in core content customized to the training needs of the industry. This unique program groups participants into cohorts and offers 40 credits of specialized information technology networking and security courses over a 50 week period in a seven (7) week format. The seven (7) week format will involve (2) courses being offered at the same time if two courses are not pre-requisites. The cohort structure of Fast Track frees the college and students from the traditional semester schedule and allows the institution to launch cohorts as needed to meet workforce demand.

All curriculum for the Fast Track Network Security Training Program will be offered online using a combination of two technology platforms: Blackboard Learning Management System and a Macromedia Video Conferencing Server. Adobe Connect macromedia video conferencing server has been used to offer several online course by SwVCC faculty.  Currently, Blackboard (Bb) is also used to manage course communication, assessment and grade book functions and to provide links to multimedia lectures delivered via macromedia videoconferencing servers.

Videoconferencing provides two critical functions: first, it allows for real-time (synchronous) meetings between instructors and students and can take the form of class lectures or one-on-one tutoring. Second, Adobe, or other compatible technologies, also allows for the creation of asynchronous learning objects or the archiving of synchronous meetings so that students may access the instructional material at anytime.

Podcasting has increased steadily in popularity as a means of distributing audio and video for education and entertainment purposes. As an augmentive measure to optimize the learning experience and to enhance academic retention, the colleges will utilize podcasting to reinforce lecture content and provide a study resource for program participants. This powerful combination of technology will allow the colleges to offer students maximum flexibility without limiting one-on-one faculty involvement.

Unlike traditional training programs, the Fast Track Network Security Program is an accelerated online workforce development program tailored to the specific skill sets and employment needs of the local information technology industry. This Career Studies Certificate program offers an accelerated, content-specific training program leading to certification (s) with employment opportunities. Certifications include CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+ and Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA). The Network Security Career Studies Certificate is an excellent add-on to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information System Technology or an add-on to a Bachelor’s degree, providing the perspective student with additional complimentary skill sets.
