Peggy R. Barber, (Director & Dean of
Engineering)
was
born in Radford, Virginia and grew up in Pulaski County. She attended
Dublin High School. After graduation she entered Radford University as a
Foreign Language Major. She fenced on the college fencing team and later
became interested in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance,
hence changing her major and graduated with a B.S. degree in Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and a minor in Foreign Language.
She continued her graduate studies at Radford University and received her
M.S. degree in Education. Immediately after graduation she was employed
by SVCC in the Math and Natural Science Division teaching health related
courses and physical education. During the summers she continued
postgraduate work in Exercise Physiology at Virginia Tech.
After three years of employment with SVCC, she was
approached by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in Arlington to
develop Instructional Programs for Health & Safety for the Mining
Industry. Ms. Barber was the first woman to complete the Underground
Federal Inspection Programs at the National Mine, Health and Safety
Academy. In May of 1995 she was appointed the Dean of Engineering. As
Engineering Dean, Ms. Barber is responsible for thirty-three different
programs of study, sixteen faculty members and special grants funded by
the Appalachian Regional Commission for Heavy Equipment GEO/Technical
Drilling and Fiber Optics Technician. She is currently serving as
Principle Investigator for the National Science Foundation Computer,
Science, Engineering and Math Scholarship program. She is a member of Phi
Kappa Phi honorary society.
Ms.
Barber’s hobbies include reading, golfing and traveling with her family.
She resides in Richlands with her husband Edward. They have two children,
Jill and Jason.
