Even though you have a “winning resume,” you will need to complete the company’s application form if asked to do so. Completing an application properly will show the employer how well you complete a document, how well you follow directions, whether the information is consistent.
* Print, don’t write; use a black pen. Typing is preferable.
* Read through the application before filling in information to determine what information goes where.
* Neatness counts; no crossed out information
* Answer every question; if a question bothers you, put “----,” or “see me” in the space. If the question does not apply to you, write “n.a.” (not applicable)
* Don’t give an expected salary; you may overprice or under price yourself. Write “open” or “negotiable.”
* Be accurate; make sure all names are spelled correctly and all addresses and phone numbers are correct.
* Be honest; misrepresentations or omissions discovered later are grounds for immediate dismissal.
* Think about your reason for leaving each previous job and state it positively. Companies don’t like quitters and don’t want employees who can’t get along with others.
* Make sure you have permission to use someone as a reference before listing them. Select people who know your skills and work habits and who will give a positive, but honest assessment of you.
* Read the entire application and be sure to sign and date it after you complete all the information requested.
