Phi Theta Kappa
ORIENTATION for Prospective Members

Students enrolled at SwVCC are eligible for membership when they are enrolled in a degree program, have completed at least 12 credit hours of classes in a degree program, and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average as noted here:
(12 - 29 hours:  CGPA of 3.5 or higher; OR 30 hours or more: CGPA of 3.25 or higher).

We are glad that you are interested in becoming a member of
Phi Theta Kappa at Southwest VA Community College.
This Orientation Website is available to eligible students who cannot attend one of the regular Orientation meetings which are held at SwVCC during the first month of the fall and spring semesters.

The DEADLINES for Submitting this ONLINE  ORIENTATION are:
 Sept. 30 in the Fall Semester,  and February 15 for the Spring Semester.

 Answer the following questions  using the links to the appropriate Phi Theta Kappa website. 
(1) At SwVCC - the Upsilon Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at SwVCC website;
(2) The International Phi Theta Kappa website; and
(3) The Virginia Region Phi Theta Kappa website. 

 1. ACTIVITIES of Phi Theta Kappa at SwVCC:  See Web Site at www.sw.edu/SVCCPTK   Indicate which activities that you think are most important for an Academic Honor Society.
 

 2. CHAPTER OFFICERS:  Contact One Officer (Tele/E-mail).  Indicate which Officer you contacted.
 

 Use the International Phi Theta Kappa Web Page at  http://www.ptk.org  for Items #s 3, 4, 5, 6:

 3. INTERNATIONAL HONORS TOPIC:  Write a brief summary of the Honors Topic, and indicate one thing you think is especially important about the Honors Topic.  What is one project you would suggest that the Upsilon Upsilon chapter at SwVCC should do for this Honors Topic?
 

 4. SATELLITE SEMINARS:  Which One of the five Seminars do you think is most important and why?
 

 5. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE PROGRAM - "CONQUERING CANCER":  What do you think is the most pressing issue in this  type of program?  What would you suggest as a project for the Upsilon Upsilon Chapter at SwVCC to pursue for this program?
 

 6. Indicate One additional program or opportunity available to you on the International Phi Theta Kappa Web Site that you find beneficial or important for you.
 

 Use the Virginia Region Web Pages at- http://www.sw.edu/ptk2  for items #s 7,  8,  9.

 7. Click on the "Activities" button, and indicate which of the Activities you think is most important and why!
 

 8. Click on the "Goals" button, and indicate which of the Goals is most important and why!!
 

 9. Read the most recent VA Region Newsletter, and indicate which article you found most helpful and why.
 

 CONCLUSION:    Discuss why you wish to become a member of Phi Theta Kappa at SwVCC (50 - 100 word paragraph).
 

  When you submit this form with your comments, it will be submitted to one of the Faculty Advisors for Phi Theta Kappa as SwVCC.  Then one of the Advisors or one of the Officers will follow up with you to complete the application process with the official application form and the deadline for submitting the Dues.  We are glad that you are interested in being a member of Phi Theta Kappa at SwVCC.
