A Word about Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor
Society of the two year college, and has
been since 1918. Chapters of Phi Theta Kappa are located in all of the 50 states, Canada,
and several U.S. territories, and other countries. Members of Phi Theta Kappa have the chance of making
life-long friends who will give love, support, and friendship when needed. Phi Theta Kappa is involved
in several functions which promote our four hallmarks, which are Scholarship, Leadership,
Service, and Fellowship. You will have the benefit of
knowing students in academic fields that you may not have contact with in your
normal schedule. You will also benefit from having contact with SwVCC
faculty beyond your academic major.
Membership provides you with the Phi Theta Kappa pin, an
engraved membership certificate, a membership card, a one year subscription to
International Phi Theta Kappa publications, information about Phi Theta Kappa
transfer scholarships, and opportunities to be involved in the local chapter,
Upsilon Upsilon, at SwVCC.
Major programs and activities with the chapter at SwVCC includes
-- Programs on the International Honors Topic (local, VA Region, International)
-- Programs on the International Service Program
-- Faculty Scholar Award, Faculty Leadership Award

ELIGIBILITY IN PHI THETA KAPPA At SwVCC
To be eligible, you must have completed at least 12 credit hours of course
work in classes that apply to an associate's degree and have at least a 3.5
cumulative grade point average.
The other option for membership is to have a CGPA of 3.25 or above after
completing 30 credit hours or more. If you meet these
standards, you will receive an invitation letter from the President of SwVCC
inviting you to attend an Orientation meeting.
At the Orientation meeting, you will meet officers and advisors, receive
information about Phi Theta Kappa including the official application, and
information about dues and the activities of the chapter at SwVCC.
Dues are currently $58, which covers the International Fee, the Virginia Region
dues, and our local chapter dues. (Dues are paid only one time.)
If you cannot attend an Orientation meeting at
SwVCC, you can do the Orientation Online by clicking on the Orientation button
above, and follow the directions.
It is easy for you to be a member no matter how busy
your schedule.
You will have the option of deciding how active you wish to be involved.
There are
No minimum requirements for involvement in order to be a member and to maintain
your membership. We do encourage you to be involved and make a
contribution to your college by strengthening the SwVCC chapter.
Some members are very involved, yet others can only be involved in a limited
way, and still others can only be involved by reading the chapter newsletter and
discussing the activities with other members. You will find that the experience
of being involved at whatever level you wish will be very rewarding.
Enhanced Membership:
For those of you who would like to be involved more in Phi
Theta Kappa. As an enhanced member you will take part in at least three projects
(one of
them being a Scholarship Hallmark Project), take part in all fundraisers, attend
60% of the meetings, and pay your dues.
Advantages of being an enhanced member: Part of the money raised by the chapter,
will go to pay for much of the cost for a member to go to a convention. Phi Theta Kappa
gift items will also be given away at the end of the semester to enhanced members. Make
more friends and have 'lots of fun!!!
Standard Membership:
For those who stay too busy to be committed to the duties of an enhanced member;
whether it be job, family, school, etc., the standard membership takes care of
it. As a standard member you need only pay your dues of $58 and participate whenever you can.
Note: If you start out as a standard/enhanced member, you can change
to the other if you feel that you have more time and can do more with the
chapter or that you cannot do as much work with the chapter as you thought or did before.
Many great things are planned for this semester!!
We have much in store for the semester!!!
To get involved, click on the "Calendar" button above or see one of the Faculty Advisors
at the "Advisors" button.
